Production of the embryo for ICSI in mare after a grade III perineal injury: A case report

This reports the case of an imported Quarter Horse mare of high genetic merit who suffered a grade III perineal laceration during her first dystocic delivery. Five surgeries were performed over a three-year period to restore anatomy and reproductive function. A protocol of follicular aspiration followed by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was then performed, resulting in five embryos that were cryopreserved by vitrification. Two embryos were transferred, one of which resulted in pregnancy and the birth of a healthy foal. The mare then underwent a conventional embryo collection program in which a viable embryo was collected and transferred. The pregnancy was confirmed and the birth was expected in July 2023. It can therefore be concluded that this mare's reproductive capacity was restored through the use of ICSI and embryo transfer (ET) biotechnologies.
